Lower East Side Composting

My experience at the Lower East Side compost yard was informative and fascinating.  The location in itself is astounding, with the river on one side and a beautiful park surrounding it.  However, the work they do I think is really great and seeing the collaboration of many different industries (food, wood) to create something useful and sustainable out of waste, is really encouraging.  If the many different aspects of a community can come together and work towards a better city and environment, it can be possible on a larger scale.  It was also interesting seeing composting on a larger scale than community gardens which I am more used to seeing.  All the factors within creating compost (separating, curing, sifting) shows how much work and effort the people in this yard put in and their dedication towards the cause.  I also learned about the difference between aerobic and anaerobic composting and the importance of having live organisms and bacteria to actually create the compost.
