1. Write a short bio to set the stage. Introduce yourself, your major, where you’re from,

and primary art/design interests

My name is Jessica; my major is fashion design, I was born in Taiwan and raised in Hong Kong, currently studying in new York. My primary design interest is creating garments with an emphasis on accessories, hardware, and finishings.

2. Describe your work. What do you make? What are the formal qualities?

The work I usually produce is comfort driven; I believe that clothing should always be wearable and practical, unnecessary and overcomplicated designs is not something you will see in my work.

My aesthetic values are clean and detail concentrated, something that one can put on quickly and easily, be comfortable in, and still be presentable and stylish.

4. How do you create your work? What tools are essential? What are your methods of

making?

I create my work beginning with research and concept then with my idea in mind I design with those research in mind all the while, staying faithful to my principles of comfort and care. Steps include but not limited to, fabric choices, sewing of the garments, creating sewing patterns and fabric manipulations. In the end, I also tend to create a digital compliment of all my researches and 2D explorations, i.e., Flats, illustrations, sketches.

5. Why do you make what you make? Why is it important to you? To others?

I make what I make because I believe that fashion and clothing is the most direct and immediate method of creation that gives a user response. Clothing are always needed, and the wearer instantly feels different depending on that they are wearing, it can change a person psychologically, physically, socially, etc. I also enjoy the processes of creating fashion, and it is important to me because I believe I have something to offer to others regarding finding a similar voice through the art of dress.

6. How do your research interests inform/intersect with your creative practice?

My research intersect with my creative precess very intimately, without research I can’t design, what I make will never be just another pretty dress, there will always be context and significance behind my designs. My research essentially creates my designs.

7. Looking forward, where are you going in your art/design profession? What do you hope to achieve? What specific steps will you take to work toward these goals?

My dream is it be able to have my brand and design for customers that trust and believe in what I make. However I realize that is a one in a million dream, but if I can work for a company that aligns with my beliefs and values what I provide and what I create. That would be another form of that goal coming true. Regarding steps, i will take to achieve that starts with internships, then getting a job that will sponsor me to stay in the US.
