Week 3: Systems Thinking

  1. some sketches for the interconnectedness:

2) conduct independent research on the effects of synthetic inks and dyes on environmental (especially water) systems.

Based on my research, the following are things I found shocking and informational:

  • The dying process, approximately 16-20 liter of water is used per shirt, which as the resources calculated, the global textile industry discharges 40,000-5,000 tons of dye into the water system. This has caused serious environmental concerns with the dye entering into the water. It diminishes the photosynthetic activity of algae which is the base of the food chain, thus, influenced every organism above it.
  • Another huge effect is on our human body. The exotic chemicals released from synthetic dye are often absorbed by our skin, especially when one’s body is warm and skin pores have opened to allow perspiration. This would also cause significant health effects, such as an increase in tumors.

3) documentation of your first FBNK entry.

For the FBNK document, I really enjoy the process of actually sitting down and just relax and observing things that around you, especially during the second year of college, things get little overwhelming. I often found myself always in a hurry to school, or to workshops, or busy doing my homework, thus has less time to truly see people around and notice things around.
