“My Self, My Selfie, and Me: The Indirect Self-Portrait, Your Caption Here

What does a portrait picture of you really reveal? Are you the image or are you the viewer’s opinion of the image? Do you see your self the same way everyone else does or is there someone else lurking below your skin? Are you curating, editing how you want () to be seen? In this project you will explore the meaning of self and the image that we put out into the world using scrapping or scraps, some yet un-named technique to explore your identity to the world to create a form that is you. Re-using materials requires innovation and a level of sophistication particularly when put to a specific intent. The form you create should be consistent with the voice you want us to read, i.e., if it should be seen on a computer? Is it large scale photographic prints torn and turned into armor? A book of fabric textures that creates recipes of you? Conventions of portraiture are often bound by technology, historical contex, culture, economics and power, and audience. Here you can think beyond a purely photographic image. While exploring the image of self, the self portrait, the selfie the image has come to mean more and to mean less…cheap and easy technology have truly altered the meaning of the self-portrait so creating a form that represents, engages, and communicates would be prescient. The less literal and more metaphoric in this project the more you will have an opportunity to experiment.” -Barbara. (The assignment)

How would I describe myself?

I dye my hair when there is a new chapter in my life, and I can easily do so because my mom is a hair stylist. My dad used to be a hair stylist before in Korea. I dyed my hair red, orange, blue, green, and grey. I cut my hair short and grew it out long. I had straight bangs, side bangs, and no bangs. I had curls and had straight hair. I am also interested in using hair because as a girl, all I see usually is a bunch of hair on the floor and in the tub.

“The selfie is a way for you to have control over how others see you, and to be seen.” “No longer shaving, when a celebrity… hairy pits”.

*What if I make an arm of hair but shave the arm pits?

Artists: Gu Wenda: glue and hair. his project was big and powerful like ‘mankind’ but the way he designed the poster-like, rice-paper-like background also reveals something fragile. wenda-gu-background wenda-gu-hair

Bill Fink: “Time and Mother” photographs made out of hair. This shows his interest in old photographs but also his interest in hair.

Nagi Noda: She is creating something that is very recognizable to the hair. She is actually playing with hair to create artworks. I can infer that she likes to play around with hair.  creative-work-with-hair-by-nagi-noda-13-photos-1 nagi-noda3

Chengdu artist Zhang DeXuan: uses weaving to create portraits. I can infer from the project that he has mastered the art of weaving and has patience.

Art Made Flesh: 35 Sculptures Rendered in Human Skin & Hair

(These are sculptures on human skin and hair)

IDEA: How about creating clothes with hair? I can weave hair together to create a long thread and sew fabric together to create something.

The hair is supposed to change what I think about myself and what i think about the world, because when I get new hair cuts, I want to change myself or the world through my new haircut. Should I make a cast type thing with glue and hair of my hips because I am the most insecure about it, and the hair is the one thing I can change very easily, but my hips have been a constant struggle that I cannot easily control.

So my art piece will be the struggle or difference between how easily I can change my hair and the difficulty of changing my figure.

Tom Friedman said that, “no one wants to look at art and have it not do anything.”

The hair is supposed to change what I think about myself and what I think about the world, because when I get new haircuts, I want to change myself or the world through my new haircut. I will make a cast with glue and hair of my hips because my hips are my biggest insecurity that I cannot easily change, while my hair is the one thing I can easily change and show off easily. In a world where we constantly change ourselves, I want people to think about what has always been a constant thing in their lives. In the 21st century, people are constantly changing

So my art piece will be the struggle or difference between the difficulty of changing my figure verse how easily I change my hair.
