History of Fashion Topic Choice

1 Vivienne Westwood 1970

1. Basic background information such as date, context, artist, designer, model — whatever is appropriate. Remember you will research the totality of information conveyed by the image.

This is Vivienne Westwood herself in 1970s. I would research about her early works, her style and her relationships and experience to Punk and music.
2. Explanation for your choice: why do you find the image interesting? Is it the aesthetic? Subject? Emotion? Memory? Narrative?

I’ve been listening to hardcore music and experimental music that originated from that period of time. And lot of Japanese young people dressed like back in the days as the image of Vivienne Westwood.  The uninhibited and free, rebellious attitude attract me. I was always regret that I never done or act to show my rebel(in a good way) when I was younger, it is also part of my imaginary lifestyle I wanted to be.

3. Discussion of its relationship to your design work and/or personal style.

Some of my work today connect a lot with music, which Vivienne Westwood was also inspired by. And as I mentioned in Question2 her lifestyle and innovation and courage always inspire me in many ways.

2. Mugler Spring1992 Ready to Wear

1. Basic background information such as date, context, artist, designer, model — whatever is appropriate. Remember you will research the totality of information conveyed by the image.

This look is from Mugler’s Spring 1992 Ready to Wear collection. Model was Niki Taylor.

2. Explanation for your choice: why do you find the image interesting? Is it the aesthetic? Subject? Emotion? Memory? Narrative?

I’ always interested in Designs that is really extra and over the board. For 1992’s fashion world, Mugler seems to be very experimental with the shape and details of the details. In addition I’m also interested in the punk movement during that time. I like the aesthetic of the collection. This look reminds me of the early science fiction and superhero characters. I think it is interesting how Mugler could be so innovative at that time and also be a piece of ready-to-wear in this case.

3. Discussion of its relationship to your design work and/or personal style.

My personal design aesthetic involves a lot of colors and shapes. And I love fun garments that could also be functioned as costumes. I would like to research more about how would punk movement affect Mugler’s designs at the time.
