C1: Bridging Difference :Trust box

During my time for my final project I had a multitude of ideas of how I wanted to express my final piece I always found that intern dynamic between relationships always fascinating and to conceptualize that into a tangible object or sculpture was really an interesting and fitting way to end this semester. While working I knew for a fact that I had wanted to create an object or piece that took at least two people to make it functional I think with such an intimate topic as a relationship I think it’s almost crucial for my part to fill a functionality to create sculpture that requires two people to operate. With that premise in mind I brainstormed ideas on how I can bridge the difference between two people en masse together to create one entity a lot of my original concept designs seen below explore different variations of the idea taking too people and having them come together to create a Final piece. below you can see my concepts and Rough ideas. the Ideas where basic at the time but once I found an Idea I liked I then expanded on it further. The photos below are the 16 concept drawings that where required in class

As my ideas began to mature and form I decided to look at the idea of taking a non-tangible fear and manifesting it into an object. I looked at concepts that could be applied to a broad spectrum of relationships but still target a very particular experience. I decided to focus on relationships that deal with a trauma or experience that was not pleasant. For example someone that was in an abusive relationship and then gets a new partner for an employee they gets put down by his boss and then gets another boss even though the forms of relationships are different there’s still a past trauma or abuse that happens. My sculpture explores the concepts in which a person tries to move on but still has the emotional pain from the last relationship often times it can be hard for a person to move on because of their fears that were instilled to them in the last relationship this sculpture take that idea and manifest that into a very realistic danger which is the screws that the protrude out of the box. At first it seems as if the person will get hurt if they touch the screws but there’s a trap door built in so the person does not actually get hurt. This teaches the person that they need to let go of their fears and move on also it deals with the idea trust as the object does not function properly without the trust of both people going through the motions correctly and this the main thesis of my project.

When working on the project there were stages of development. I created a prototype out of cardboard to test out the range of motion and to see how the sculpture would function this is all that I deemed was important for the prototyping stage as the smooth transition of the trapdoor would be worked out in later production

When looking at improvements that were made on my final project and things that I learned and took the time actually Think about what I wanted to do. I allow my self  to not feel rushed as I said during my final critique I really try to redeem myself from the last wood project I worked on I took my time to plan out what I wanted to do and go through all the steps such as doing concept drawings creating a prototype and then the final piece after that I found that once I did that the rest of project was very smooth and easy to do I told myself that I wasn’t a do it all in one night and I divvied up the tasks throughout the week I did the cutting one-day the drilling the next day and then a couple days later I did the finishing touches and added the final coat of  lacquer .for me that was my biggest lesson for this project was just time management  that’s been my biggest struggle during the whole semester because of the fact that this class is very hands-on and I was not ready for the multi note take complete projects. So I feel like I was my biggest accomplishment in my project. Also my final sculpture had to move and function correctly so the science behind designing that and making it safe was also a big success for me I’m really happy with how it turned out overall it was a great experience and one of my most enjoyable projects to date.

When looking at my selected reading a flatland the main characters almost seen as a Christlike figure as he comes to bring upon a new era and change peoples way of thinking throughout the novel he faces a lot of hardship and we see his process of overcoming it in the end because of that I really think that that is related to my final piece at is about overcoming adversity being able to face challenges overtime and overcome them is a big part of my peace and I really feel like that relates to reading as people it’s 100% certain that we will deal with hardship in are life some people don’t cope well and end up becoming self-destructive these ideas and concepts are seen throughout the book this is why I feel like my final sculpture really relate to that because of the fact that my sculpture is not doing with hardship and moving on and reaching a better state of life

below are photos of my final project ! also my finished drawings are down there. the design for me was to look mid-evil and intimidating. over all this for me fit the ascetic I was going for

Here are process photos
