“Is Fashion Modern?” Exhibit at MOMA

On Friday, October 20th, 2017, I visited the Museum of Modern Art to see the “Is Fashion Modern?” Exhibit, which displayed stereotypes of one-hundred eleven of the most iconic items of clothing through the history of fashion, along with prototypes that were commissioned by the museum to current designers and artists.

I really enjoyed the prototypes of the clothing that were displayed. I could tell how the artist/designer came from the original point to the newly designed one. They were incredibly strange and outlandish, which I loved. It is also a testament to fashion that the newest trends will always seem wondrously weird, therefore increasing in popularity due to uniqueness.

However, I was mentally and physically lost within the exhibit. I feel like as I was walking, there was no real path or flow in the exhibit. I understand that sometimes curators do that on purpose, but for me it created a sense of discord in this particular exhibit. Also, some items were displayed rather strangely. I heard once we got back in class that more than half the class missed a certain item because it was displayed very high on the wall near the ceiling.

Overall, it was a very interesting exhibit for me as a non-fashion student. I enjoyed seeing which items have lasted to the present and which were lasted shortly but made a large impact in fashion nonetheless. It’s eye-opening to see what new technology can enable fashion to become. With 3D printing technology and much more, I imagine that fashion will continue to rapidly change and develop into new shapes and forms that we haven’t seen before.
