Gestalt Laws Poster
For this assignment, I wanted to create a sort of “infographic” going over the five Gestalt laws that were given.
- Simplicity — This means that our eye views objects in the simplest way possible.
- Similarity — This means that when objects look similar, we mentally group them together.
- Nearness/Proximity — This means that our eyes group objects together when they are nearby.
- Good Continuation. — This means that our brains naturally finish the flow of a path, even if there are gaps.
- Figure/Ground — This means that our brains perceive objects as either being in the foreground or background.
When coming up with the idea, my family was away, so I didn’t have access to traditional drawing tools for a basic sketch. So, I jumped right into InDesign and Illustrator.
My first draft is below. I experimented with alternating left and right alignment of the text, but this just seemed confusing, so I went with a more uniform, simple approach. I struggled with finding the right colors at first, but that improved with further iteration.
I ended up making a pallette that looked good on Coolers.co and used that. I highly recommend that site for an easy way to generate great looking color palettes.
And, after changing the colors to use this new palette, here’s the final version!
