Bridge 4 Part 3

  • What is the mock-up about?

This mock-up is made to bring participation from the audience. It is about the relationship between the colors and its surrounding temperatures. When the temperature increases, the color of the middle part will turn into orange and red shades. However, when the temperature decreases, the color of the middle part will turn into blue and purple shades. Having many people around the sculpture would result reddish colors and having less people around it would result blueish colors. The purpose of this experiment was inspired by Nam June Paik, especially by his performances in the Fluxus movement. The Fluxus movement was an international movement in the 1960s and 1970s where the artists experimented unfamiliar performances. It is also important that the process of the performances are clearly revealed to the audience. Although I didn’t get to clearly demonstrate what I originally thought and planned, if I actually start on this project with other real materials, such as acrylics and lightings, then it will thoroughly present its purpose. The transparent part in this mock-up will be opaque in the actual sculpture and the opaque parts in here will be transparent in the actual sculpture.

  • What is your biggest challenge or question about this mock-up?

My biggest challenge was to demonstrate my plans in this small mock-up. Today, I thought materials were limited to create this transparent part better than it is now. However, if I get to use acrylics, then I would definitely make a clear sculpture with them. Also, since this mock-up was made small, it required meticulous craftsmanship. I would like to remake this mock-up with well-prepared materials and move on to start making my actual sculpture.
