Manus x Machina Exhibition

The longer I look at certain garments, the more interesting they become to me. I often think about how they are created and the process behind making them. When something is so complex looking, with repetitive designs, it plays with my brain and makes me think about how it was made. I experienced this with one garment that did this for me at the Manus x Machina Exhibition. This specific piece was created by Gareth Pugh, born in 1981 in Britain. Looking back to that moment when I saw the garment for the first time, I realize that I was drawn to it because of the materials it was made out of. When looking at it I initially wanted to say that the main materials used in the jacket were straws, but I thought using straws was too generic for something that looked so perfect. I honestly could not believe it when I read the materials list and realized that drinking straws were the main material to make the interesting texture on the jacket.  I think I was fooled because the straws were mixed with silk-wool gazar and an overlay of mesh. The jacket was made for the autumn/ winter 2015-16 collection of Gareth Pugh. He did an excellent job making something look like something else with a different material, in this case drinking straws looking like feathers, and creating that translucent look of white feathers. This is probably because there are so many straws in the jacket. This is why I picked this garment out of all the amazing things in the exhibition.

The quote by Miuccia Prada connected with me because he was talking about trying new materials and making them look different than that they actually are. The opening of the quote makes a reference to machines not being the creators of different fabrics. It’s up to the minds of people to come up with the idea, and then use technology help us create it.
