Cross-Course Evaluation

Hi my name is Kellehanna. I’m from Denver, Colorado. Before going to Parsons I went to a middle and high school called Denver School of the Arts for 7 years. Where I majored in Visual Arts. From those 7 years, I learned all the technical skills of painting, drawing and sculpture. Being in a creative environment for long amount of time made me realized that I wanted to continue on this path of being a creative person. In high school, I realized that I wanted to be in the fashion in industry where I was making my own garment and see them on people. There is something about seeing your garment on a person that’s a magical moment when your ideas come to life and you can share it with the world. When I’m creating something, I have many insertions one being classical art. Classical art is something that makes me glow when thinking about it. Looking at an oil painting and seeing the movement in fabric draped on a person’s body, worlds cannot explain the feeling apparitions I have for those artist during those times. Another place where I find my inspiration is the world around me taking little moments and items, making them my inspiration for my next upcoming project.

Looking at my body of work instantly, one thing that I noticed is. I have referenced the body anatomy for inspiration many times. In Studio: Fake, I had created a spine for my partner that I had to create a prostatic for. The other time was making a garment with the inspiration of body mussels creating my own textiles to make the idea of mussels on top of the body. Taking your insides and putting them on the insides. The reason why I fall back for inspiration of the body is because I have grown up in a house hold where my mom is a nurse and science was a big deal. Another conman them I saw in my Learning Portfolio is history and being inspired me is the past and making it modern is a big factor in my work. Studying history makes me think of the question, what if I changed this to make it like this? That’s where I get this ideas from.

From my first year explains I have been very thankful that Parsons’ makes their student learning all different types of skill that they could uses in their filled of studies. The techniques that I have learn for one class I have used for another class because that’s the point trying to connect all the class together to make yourself a better artist. I have not used one skill in one class to uses in another class yet but I’m hoping to do so in the future. Now that I know how to do different things skill wise in different departments of art and uses it to make something bigger and better. It all starts with a question. That questions grow with the idea of reach and looking up past works of others artist with smellier ideas as me. I as a creative mind have to think about the what if question. With anything it does not matter if it’s a studio base class or an academic class reaches is very important. Knowing what you are doing is very important in presenting and creating. For example, in studio and seminar I had the joy to pick my own topic that I was interested in. With this interest, it has created to a paper and making a jacket with the idea of men’s wear in Rococo period during the 17th and till the mid 18th century. I had a blast in these classes because of the research that I put into the project. The different questions that I had on this topic was answered or need more time to look into the question to be found.

Looking back at the projects that I have completed throughout the year there are some that have been successful than others. Sometimes it works for me and other time it does not. It’s all about getting your hands wet. One project that I have success in trying but the outcome was not what I wanted or thought it would come out to be. For one class, Digital Fabrication for the Body, I had to create a garment for the torso in the relation of tension and compression of movement of the body. When looking into what I would like to create. In the anatomy was something that I wanted to uses in the idea of creating the garment. Taking your insides and turning it inside out. Making yourself have a second skin. There was a lot of sketching of how I was going to communicate the idea that I had in mind to the public. It all started with the spin and how it moved the body in different directions. Without the spin our bodies would not be able to move the way that we want it to do. Cutting out different sizes of circles to go down the spin. When the garment moves, the outer spin moves too. On the front of the garment it shows the mussel that works the body. The mussels are created by folding and sewing the fabric over and over to make an interesting textual. On the other side of the garment I hand knitted a piece that was a like skin tissue. The sleeves on the garment are nude tulle that aces like skin hints the second skin idea. The overall garment was fine in how it looked but what made it successful to me what the ideas and the different techniques that was put into the garment to create a story about the body.

Final Garment

In my studio class, second semester for our final we were given the option to choices what were we wanted to make for our final. This was great opportunity to explore something that we were interested in studying the future in school or just wanted to work on this topic. I made the choices to create a men’s jacket inspired by the 17th 18th century men’s wear. With the question, why when looking at the men’s wear during this time why do modern day people think it would look feminine. When making the jacket this question was brought up to my attention a lot. When designing the jacket, I dint want to copy it right off the bat. I wanted to take inspirations from the time period of the clothing that they wore. I had to study the cut of the coats that being wore by the male figures. The embellishment that was put on the coat was hand embroidery. I didn’t want to do that to the coat that I was making. I wanted to be fresh and modern to the modern male figure of today. That’s when the laser cutting of the flowers on the coat make in to play. Without this factor, the jacket would not be that interesting to look at the with the just the red orange and grey wool fabric. Overall the coat came out every nice with some factors to it but that’s the road that I have to go down when creating something that I have not created before. It’s one of my proudest things that I have created during my first years at Persons. With the two highest that I have picket it shows that I can reflect on this that are good and that things that did not go so well in the outcome of the garment and this what makes it a strong piece.

Final Garment

I’m glad that the first year has taught me some much about my interest in art and the different things that I can do with fashion. In fashion sky is the limit. My ideas can keep on going, it does not matter what others think all it matters in the end is the you can execute your idea the share with others. I want to keep exploring the world throw the body and history and keep asking questions about this topic throw out my studies in Parsons. I can’t think of witch project I want to future explore during my time at school but I will look back at my learning portfolio of different ideas that have sparked.
