Dress Practice Interview: Part 2

Reflection

When I was interviewing Francesca the theme of comfort came up in her answers multiple times. I don’t think she knew that she was talking about comfort so often. She would talk about why she wore color and not black. Color is a way to express herself when people first meet her. When you first meet her, she is more reserved and quiet. Francesca is not that comfortable in large or new places that she is not familiar with. That’s when color comes in to play in her wardrobe. When she feels comfortable in her environment she opens up with jokes and laughter all the time. Letting you know her personally with her clothing when you don’t know her. Most of Francesca’s clothing that she owns is her mother’s. She talks about the garments as she is in the arms of her mother back home. In the interview, I could tell her relationship with her mother was close. Having pieces of home with her was one of the best comforts that she could ask for and that threw her mother’s clothing.

Off the bat, one thing that I noticed about Francesca was she was very organized with her clothing. When I looked at her closet it looked net and organized but in her head, it was more than that. She had organized it by the length of the sleeve down to the width of the strap of the garment. She told me that if something is missed placed it will bug her till she moves the garment to the right place. To me, that is a small thing and would not bother me but we all have our own differences when it comes to organizing our clothing. Going into the interview I thought Francesca and I had similar styles and took inspiration from the same things but I was wrong. Her being two years younger than me felt like she was infused more my social media for the way she dressed. In other words, her style was more trend-based then me. I’m the opposite, I like to look different from others and don’t like to dress like on trend. This made the outcome of the interview interesting because I thought we had similar styles. Teaching me that everyone has a different experience with clothing and the relationship of the body. Francesca’s relationship with her clothing is a comfort. That feeling of being protected or having a scene of home part of her body. “The materials we hang on at the margins of our body fabric, jewelry, paint or feathers enjoy a close proximity to the flash outlining infant sizing abstracting or extending the body.” In Joanne Entwistle’s, The Dressed Body reminded me of Francesca and her wearing oversized clothes and turtlenecks made her feel safe and comfortable in them that’s her relationship with clothing.
