Week 7: Zone Walk

Week 7: Zone Walk

I actually filmed a video about my experiences, but I could not upload it here, so here are the pictures from the video.

– How does having an awareness of evacuation zones change the way you experience your walk and the area around Parsons?

It gives people a clear idea that whether they will have direct contact of natural disaster. In some way, it’s quite scary, but you also get to experience.

– What areas appear to be vulnerable to storm surge, if any?

From 1 to 3, they all will suffer a lot when storm hit.

– Do any buildings/infrastructures look more prepared for the next storm — how?

I’m not really sure if they are ready for next storm, even though there are signs on the door signified what the zone is but I don’t think people recognized. I took me sometime  to find out the zones signs.

– Are any effects of Hurricane Sandy visible?

There are signs on the streets signified the zones.

– Choose one zone (1-6) as your focus.

What is a design idea you have that would communicate/show people what zone they inhabit?

I would make the sign on walking traffic light  next to every traffic light so while people’s reading the traffic light they will see the zone sign. Also I want to use different shape to signified different color, because there are also color blind people in the district.

What kind of tool, device or signage would you make?

Shaped and colors sign that would be placed on places that people would see everyday and very often.

Include a list of 3-5 challenges you would face in implementing this project in NYC (think about resiliency of materials, language issues, access to information, visibility during different times of day or during storms, diversity of public etc.).

Challenges

  1. color blind people: use specific shape to signified zones
  2. given bigger signs to put more language on at the tourist area.
  3. there will be color on the sidewalk to talk people which zone they are in.
  4. the sign has to be water prove.

3 ideas:

1) What will you make and why? (an object, clothing, set of tools, skill manual, a design for connecting you to other people, animals or the earth, calms/relieves stress etc.)

A sign that distinguish the hurricane zone, which include different color and shapes to signify different zones:

2) In what ways will this object be useful to you over 50 years of change?

This object will be useful everywhere and anytime to signify the zones. It will last for 50 years since I want it to be stainless Steele.

3) What specific event(s) of environmental changes will it help you navigate?

It will tell you the zones which also add more social resiliency to the hurricane topics nowadays.

4) How will it be resilient (use of materials, used in more than one way etc.) and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage ?

It will tell people about the zone and people will be aware and maybe take action into telling people about the zones and add new facilities. For color blind people, they will understand them better because it’s in shapes.

5) Will it be designed for a particular place? (New York, your hometown etc.)

So far, I think it will be find in New York, but I want to see systems that’s similar to this in other coastal cities in the the world.

2nd idea:

1) What will you make and why? (an object, clothing, set of tools, skill manual, a design for connecting you to other people, animals or the earth, calms/relieves stress etc.)

I want to design a top or a dress that will use stains to be part of it’s decoration

2) In what ways will this object be useful to you over 50 years of change?

Sometimes you just through away clothes because it got stains that you could not wash off, this dress or top can fully use the stains color and create new patterns.

3) What specific event(s) of environmental changes will it help you navigate?

People won’t throw away their clothes and create farther waste.

4) How will it be resilient (use of materials, used in more than one way etc.) and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage ?

Since you are not throwing way the clothes, it’s not going to create more waste for the environment.

5) Will it be designed for a particular place? (New York, your hometown etc.)

I think this design is suits for everyone, because people needs clothes.

3rd basket hat

1) What will you make and why? (an object, clothing, set of tools, skill manual, a design for connecting you to other people, animals or the earth, calms/relieves stress etc.)

Since I always lose my hat, this design is dedicated to people like me who alway lose their stuff and causes unnecessary waste alone the way.  This is a hat that’s made out of straws or biodegradable materials and you can turn it into hat or bag depend on the situation.

2) In what ways will this object be useful to you over 50 years of change?

Since it’s biodegradable, it might be disappear in the ground in 50 years.

3) What specific event(s) of environmental changes will it help you navigate?

It plays on the idea of “trying to create less waste as possible.”

4) How will it be resilient (use of materials, used in more than one way etc.) and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage ?

This is a design is quite useful and recyclable which can reminds people how versatile the sustainable design can be.

5) Will it be designed for a particular place? (New York, your hometown etc.)

Again, this is a design for everyone.
