A book as an Object

A book is generally seen as an object. A physical copy of information or storytelling. An object where pictures and imagination can grow. There are endless surprises. The creation of pop up books expands this notion into an even greater object of art. It incorporates 3D imagery with a skilled craft through paper and folding. In the lecture we explored many artists who took this to immersive levels. Showcasing beautifully crafted depictions of folktales, documentation, and artistic expression.

my own pop up book, would be a 12 page series of poetry and illustrations depicting complex mental health struggles. Because of my love of zines, I would make it quite simplistic and minimalist, while to illustrations and pop ups would have articulate line work and detailed precision.

“I DONT LOVE ME, BUT I LOVE ME.”

A quote taken from on of my personal diary poems. Referring to how easy it is to hate myself, but at the same time, I love myself unconditionally. Wanting the best of myself to survive in this complex world. I challenge the concept of self loathing on a surface level, by questioning wether the hate is motivated by self improvement or desire to fix yourself wether it may be superficial or internal. People often say that they do not love themselves, even having a deep hatred for themselves. To what extent does that go? My poem focuses on my journey with myself, and breaks down how I actually feel about myself.

Each page of my pop up zine would have a poem from my personal diary, along with an illustration that accompanies it. The illustrations would have pocket and slot that you can pull and open up, revealing pop up style designs.

For examples, I will feature 3 illustrated replicas of my poems and what “pop up” features they would have, along with an illustrated demo of how they work.

  1. “I can pull my teeth”

2. “The Vermin inside me”

3. “I am my predator”
