The first aphorism I selected from Christopher Breward was “Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition.” I believe this can touch on multiple themes. One is that fashion is not something that defines you in the sense that it has the ability to capture one’s whole essence and passions. But, rather is something to be observed and questioned in order to learn about the wearer. Fashion does not define someones gender, sexuality, etc. It is a form of expression, an art form, that is meant to be questioned in order to learn.

The second aphorism is as follows:

“Fashion moves in space and time. It shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellations. Through its forms we have an opportunity to re-unite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.”

This discusses the technological advances/achievements the fashion industry has continued to make since industrialization and mass production. This aphorism is commenting on the use of foreign factories to produce goods, stating that we need to create a bond and safety between the countries demanding production and producing. To re-unite the craft and art of assembling garments with the consciousness of producing at a quicker rate and in safe conditions. Fast fashion destroys many countries, and the production of cheap garments quickly is unsafe for those creating them and those wearing these items. Re-uniting older practices or ones that emphasize on better working conditions and a reduce in usage of toxic chemicals, is essential.
