SPACE AND MATERIALITY – PLASTER HAND-SPACE-SOLID

Project 3: PLASTER HAND-SPACE-SOLID

The term ‘space’ has such a complex yet very obvious meaning to itself. It can be visible or invisible. It can be recognised very easily or can require a very dedicated look.

The space that is hidden inside our hands was simply embodied with the help of a little plaster. A little bit of time and then, a solid understanding of a ‘hidden space’ was discovered.

A quick sketch and some notes were taken by my classmate while I was keeping the shape of my hand sturdy.

Capturing the small wrinkles, indents and the dramatic shadows brought the ‘invisible space’ to life!

After creating this hand-space sculpture, a vessel to keep it safe was a must have. With the help of a handful of skewers, some pieces of foam core, I put together a measuring tool called Profile Gauge. To have accurate and right measurements, every level of the hand sculpture was measured with this tool.

The remaining carvings from the foam core were stacked on top of each other in the same order with the measurements that were taken from each level of the hand sculpture.

The remaining carvings were also used in this layered drawings too. Each carving was traced on a pice of paper and then stacked on top of each other following the order of the levels. The structure that was made out of wooden skewers and string adds a very delicate but sturdy outlook to the piece.

I'm an artists in the making. I have thoughts under construction and feelings under protection.
