Week 7: Zone Walk and Final Project Ideas

DESIGN 1

  • What will you make and why? (an object, clothing, set of tools,

skill manual, a design for connecting you to other people, animals or the earth, calms/relieves stress etc.)

For my first design idea, I am going to be designing a matchbox and matches. Although the concept of matchboxes doesn’t go well with sustainability and doesn’t serve as a solution for the environmental changes in our world, my design will be for itself. The reason I came up with an idea of making a matchbox is because of the irony between saving the trees and lighting a fire. Every time a person will purchase this item, it will make them be aware of the their surrounding which doesn’t have a voice. For example, trees, animals etc. The unique design of the object will capture the eye and stand up among all the other objects around it.

  • In what ways will this object be useful to you over 50 years of change?

Because of the fact that it is a consumable object, it will unfortunately not last for over 50 years. However, with the messages and information around the packaging, awareness and a point of view will hopefully be around in people’s minds over 50 years. I believe that a design should not be limited to just have a long term life. The idea and the message that is behind that design should be also considered as a fact of long life design.

  • What specific event(s) of environmental changes will it help you navigate?

For this design, I specifically focused on wild or man made forest fires. Hundreds and thousands of various kinds of trees are burnt and damaged during wild and man made fires. Within the distortion of the forest, the ecological life, the animal habitats are also affected very seriously.

  • How will it be resilient (use of materials, used in more than one way etc.) and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage?

Because of the way that I designed the matchboxes they wont be actually for suitable for practical use. The detailed design and the characteristics of every tree will add an art piece to design and make people use it as a decoration piece too.

  • Will it be designed for a particular place? (New York, your hometown etc.)

The design is not limited to a particular area, which makes it have universal message hidden inside it. Whoever uses it around the world will simply get the same message and start to think about the wild and man made fires.

DEISIGN 2:

  • What will you make and why? (an object, clothing, set of tools, skill manual, a design for connecting you to other people, animals or the earth, calms/relieves stress etc.)

For my second design idea, I want to come up with paper clay jewelry designs. By using paper as a main source of material for my design will not only give the paper a second life but also make the people who wear the jewelry feel that they care and pay attention to the environment.

  • In what ways will this object be useful to you over 50 years of change?

When paper is turned into a clay form, it becomes much more durable and stabile. The chance of breaking, damaging the jewelry will be directly eliminated which will help it to have a longer lifetime.

  • What specific event(s) of environmental changes will it help you navigate?

With this design another solution and an option to recycle paper will occur. The amount of wasted paper and the unused paper sources will hopefully have another chance to come back to life with a different purpose.

  • How will it be resilient (use of materials, used in more than one way etc.) and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage?

The process of making paper clay is so easy and basic which makes both the repairing and the re-making of the jewelry very handy and practical. Also, if one piece of the jewelry is damaged for some reason, it can be re-added to the new batch of the paper clay and be formed into a new piece.

5) Will it be designed for a particular place? (New York, your

I think this design will be mostly targeted to females around the world. Any women that cares and values the environment can enjoy and wear this jewelry design.

DESING 3:

  • What will you make and why? (an object, clothing, set of tools, skill manual, a design for connecting you to other people, animals or the earth, calms/relieves stress etc.)

For my last design idea I wanted to come up with something that not only has a side of sustainability but also serves a social purpose. I was inspired form the presentation that we attended last week which was about natural dyes, local materials and local labor. I have designed a very simple and basic baby wrap which I will be dyeing with various kinds of natural dye and then giving them to the babies of the refugees in the Mediterranean that are surviving for their life in the cold.

  • In what ways will this object be useful to you over 50 years of change?

This object will not have a lifetime over 50 years, maybe not only a day just ike those unfortunent refugees that are out in the cold water. However, it will be crucial to keep a baby warm and hopefully add just a tiny bit of comfort to their journey.

  • What specific event(s) of environmental changes will it help you navigate?

This design idea is not directly connected to any environmental change apart form using natural dyes to eliminate the chemicals that are used in the process of dyeing fabric.

  • How will it be resilient (use of materials, used in more than one way etc.) and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage ?

With the wide variety of natural dyes it is easy to always re-dye the fabric and come up with different tones and effects. Aside from its material values, the message and the humanistic idea behind it will hopefully make someone think about the horrible situation that is going on right now in a lot of peoples lives.

  • Will it be designed for a particular place? (New York, your hometown etc.)

This design is especially for the babies of refugees that are trying to survive in the Mediterranean sea.

-ZONE WALK-

  • How does having an awareness of evacuation zones change the way you experience your walk and the area around Parsons?

When I began my zone walk on a crisp and cold New York morning, I came out of my building all wrapped up quite heavily I juggled a bit with my gloves and my phone in order to take good pictures to document my walk. I wanted to go down to the Hudson river and explore one of my favorite parts of the city. However, this mornings walk was different than others in a way that I wasn’t just looking for cute shops or tasty cafes, I was searching for some remainings from Hurricane Sandy, the height and the situation of the stairs that walks up to peoples houses and many more observative awkwardness.

I realized how these zones ‘locked’ Parsons and surrounded the school.

  • What areas appear to be vulnerable to storm surge, if any?

During my walk I tried very hard to capture or find anykind of clue or solid evidences of the hurricane. But unfortunently I wasn’t able to find anything, and I think the city has evolved and repaired itself in the recent years after the hurricane.

  • Do any buildings/infrastructures look more prepared for the next storm — how?

I have noticed that the stairs that goes up to town houses raised their height and looked like they have used more durable material like thicker bricks, stones and walls. The basement storage areas that cfaes and many shops have, tried to seal their doors and cabinets with either silicone or construction foam.

  • Are any effects of Hurricane Sandy visible?

I am sure there are some visible effects of Hurricane Sandy but I wasn’t able to witness anything.

I have mapped my walk on a cafe’s napkin that I stopped along the way and thought it was more appropriate than a regular piece of paper:)

  • Choose one zone (1-6) as your focus. What is a design idea you have that would communicate/show people what zone they inhabit? What kind of tool, device or signage would you make?  Include a list of 3-5 challenges you would face in implementing this project in NYC (think about resiliency of materials, language issues, access to information, visibility during different times of day or during storms, diversity of public etc.).
  • I chose the intersection of 9th and 8th avenue as my zone spot to illustrate the zones that they belong to. The area is marked in the 6th ans 5th zone, which happenes to be the most cruticial and vulnerable part of the city. Below are both the design/ poster and the logo that I have created to illustrate the distance between the two zones that are in different levels of emergency.  Carrying my ‘mapping’ style of the street, I designed a logo that will be a sprayed on the streets around the area. Incase its not visible during night time, florescent paint will be used to make it visible.
