FINAL DESIGN BRIEF

1)BRIEF FORM FOR SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS FINAL-2519j5f

2) Read the following article: Damaging Your iPhone, Accidentally, on Purpose (Links to an external site.).

  • How you ever felt this way about an object you’ve owned?

I think I cant relate myself to this article very much because I have always been quite aware and careful about my belongings and the things I own. I try to use them to their best extend and take good care of them so that they would actually last me.

  • How does your final project challenge having this mentality towards objects?

My final project gives people options of using the piece so that once they are bored or not satisfied enough with the object they have another chance to put it in use. I have tried to create something that I would want to keep and hold on to myself so that the whole process and the making of it would actually represent my artistic character and choices of design.

3) In preparation for next week, read about what New York City (Links to an external site.) and Central Park were like during the Pleistocene (Links to an external site.) (the last Ice Age). Write a brief summary.

In this article, we get to know that New York is the southernmost boundary to an ice sheet that shaped most of North America. With the outwashes and the things that the rivers carried- along Long Island was created. With the ending of the recent ice age, extreme changes in both climate and habitats were seen. The plant and animal life were deeply affected and even some species started to disappear.

As Long Island is the piece od land that was shaped by the glacier, it is possible to experience the glacier terrain in the mountains and valleys.

4) Listen to this 23-minute podcast. “We are the Meteor” (Links to an external site.):

– What surprised you about this audio piece?

The pace of climate change is the one thing that hit me. How quickly it developed and moved along is a very scary process. And seeing how us, the people that are the main reason to this change is still so ignorant and careless made me feel uncomfortable and slightly angry.

  • Given what was discussed in the audio piece (and after taking this class), reading about what New York was like during the Pleistocene (last Ice Age), what do you think New York City’s climate will be like 1000 years from now?

As mentioned in the audio piece and in our in-class discussions, our world has experienced several times of extreme weather conditions and natural disasters. Both hot and cold phases took over the earth in different parts of the history and I think that with the rapidly changing climate it wont be a surprise to have another drastic weather change. Closed and controlled living and entertainment spaces can be an alternative to maintain a ‘normal’ life style. Transportation can be made with high technology speedy vehicles to avoid any air contact.

What are the five reasons, shared by the Dutch scientist (audio timecode 17:00) explaining what humans are “wired to destroy our environment?” Do you agree?  Does your final project counter any of these reasons?

  • Value personal interest over other interests
  • Obsessed my status.
  • Value present over future
  • Copy unconsciously the behaviors of other surrounding us.
  • Disregard novel threats.

I do agree, sadly but it is becoming quiet common to come across people like this in our everyday lives day after day. With my final piece, I believe that I am giving out a message to not only re-think how we treat certain materials but also I am showing a way to turn an existing material in to something very useful and beautiful.

I'm an artists in the making. I have thoughts under construction and feelings under protection.
