Feel What You See

This second to last seminar/studio assignment was based on the Rorschach physiology test. It is a very well-known, tell-what you see practice that is done with some black ink blots.

The clients are asked to tell what they see and how they interpret it using their creativity. From the given answers, the psychologist analyses the state of the person.

I am pretty sure that, that’s not the intention of our professors..

Starting to work on this assignment was a bit challenging for me, I must admit. The endless possible shapes and relatable subject kind of frustrated me at the beginning. Because the inkblots are so open to interpretation I was jumping from an idea to another. Many sketches ended up under my desk, forming a mountain of unsettled ideas.

At the end I decided to go with my instincts and take it more of a self reflective project. In every inkblot I traced a pair of butterfly wings that coordinated with the outline of the inkblot. I kept it small and intricate so that I could reflect the delicacy of the butterfly. Then I designed and colour coordinated each wing according to how I felt at that moment. After I completed the total 16 of them, it was time to tie a narrative into the whole composition. Although this was a required part of the assignment, the form of the narrative was up to us.

I took it more conceptually and only used a very limited amount of text and narration. I dedicated each butterfly to a woman that made an influence on me and my character. From family to friends, I tried to stick with my feelings and note down the first 16 that came to my mind immediately. However now that I look back, I feel like I need to continue this series of butterflies because 16 is no way near to be enough.

The life of a butterfly is only a day.

All that beauty, delicacy and fragility is just for a single lifetime. I dedicate these 16 butterflies to those woman who will always be an infinite beauty in my heart..

I'm an artists in the making. I have thoughts under construction and feelings under protection.
