History of Fashion: Final Paper Topic Choice

  1. Cindy Crawford & Naomi Campbell in Latex | Thierry Mugler RTW Spring 1991. I chose this image because I believe Mugler in the 90’s was not only aesthetically beautiful but very revolutionary for its time. The use of such iconic models such as Crawford and Campbell only makes it that much more memorable. I believe his work is similar to my own personal style. The certain edge he brought to the runway using materials such as latex is a historic event that I would like to learn more about.

2. My mother with friends in 1985 at a high school dance in my home town of San Francisco. Her outfit was thrifted but doesn’t appear that way. I love this image because it not only gives me proof that my mother had good style but I believe it was direct cultural influence. From the bolo tie to the hot pink blazers and the slicked back hair, I think it’s a great image. This definitely relates to my personal style because I would wear that outfit today. I love the bright color and I truly believe fashion comes back around as I know all my friends would love it too.

3. Yves Saint Laurent, center, poses with Betty Catroux, left, and Loulou de la Falaise outside his Rive Gauche boutique in London in 1969. I found this image interesting because it’s a very casual photo but displays so much about the time period and the style of YSL during that period. An example being the iconic safari jackets they’re all wearing which was a staple in designs for Yves. It also seems to tell a story about the designer and his relationship with his models and clothes. This design work and style differs from my own slightly but the historic designs and memorable pieces from Yves Saint Laurent are endless so I wanted to highlight one of them as well as himself.
