Experience + Meaning: Kara Walker, “Event Horizon”

Kara Walker’s piece, “Event Horizon”, is a particularly poignant art piece for me to visit. I’m a child of a mixed race couple, and my grandfather was a Tuskegee Airman. My mother’s side of my family was brought to America through the Virginian slave trade, where they were sold into slavery in Kentucky. This mural rather clearly is representative of slavery/the underground railroad and it’s many tribulations. I went to visit this piece with my mother and watched her tear up as she talked about her experience as a black woman in America and her father’s experience having been involved heavily in the Civil Rights movement–how she thought things had changed and where they would go next.
