Fashion
Fashion is formed by our society and by individuals. Time, Personality, aesthetics, and culture affect our dressing, the taste, and the trend. The differences of me understanding fashion from the beginning and now are how fashion is not a separated form by itself. ‘Fashion’ is not just an independent form or object, however, it connects with the time in the past and rapidly changing due to the modern society that we have. From the reading, Thinking through Fashion by Peter McNeil, he also stated that “…inter-linked aesthetic and social aspects of contemporary society.”^1 From the influence of Simmel research on fashion, scholars are dependent on the research for fashion because Simmel’s research is not only about fashion but researching on contemporary society too. How research on fashion is based on the understanding of each person’s personalities and decision.
Another example is to reflect upon the trends and styles that our current time period has. Street-style is currently seen in many places and brands, for example, Burberry changed its logo from “Bodoni”, a classical font to a more modern font. The modern font “san serif” is similar like other brands, Off White, Celine, and more. Now the Logo is more suitable for streetwear and there are many designs that appears in the show with a huge logo and tons of hoodie style. Then comparing to the past, in the 1940s has the hourglass shape silhouettes, and it was the new look trend at the time. Fashion forms upon our understanding of time and society. The definition of ‘Fashion’ changes through time and there is no particular style that defines fashion. Fashion is defined by us and the creators or inventors from our time.
