Christopher Breward’s aphorisms from his foreword to Fashion Studies
- “Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way, that poetry is intensely personal. it is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.” —–Christopher Breward This quote, Christopher Breward have stated that fashion is personal and what you wear tells others about yourself and provides a visual personality of yourself. On the other hand, the clothing itself tells a story too, such as, where the clothing might come from and what it has been through. I agree with this statement because as Muccia Prada has said that “In this fast-paced world, fashion is an instant language.” When we first meet a person or just walking by a stranger, without communicating, the first impression is from visual. Therefore by looking at the person’s fashion, we can assume their favorite colors or the mood on that day. Also, corresponding to ” it is medium through which personal stories can be told…”, when we buy vintages or clothing that re passed on from our ancestors or family member, the clothing itself speaks story. The clothing itself is worn by a different person in different time or period, results the behind story or identity of the clothing.
- “Fashion is gossip. Never underestimate the power of gossip. Semiologists are driven into ecstasies of supposition by its whisper.”—–Christopher Breward
This statement provokes the meaning of how fashion styles are passed to different people by discussing or communicating with others in language. To add on and with an agreement, I do believe that fashion trends are passed around by speaking and showing. By talking to someone, it is another fastest way to spread information. If you tell someone a fashion item you recommended, then the other person might tell another person as well. Moreover, social media is a way of communicating as well, you have access to different countries and people, therefore it is like gossiping since it spreads fast as gossips.
