Cultural Self Portrait in Wire

Process:

Final Work:

At the start, I was finding different things that represent my Chinese culture. Furthermore, I knew that I wanted to do something that will show intensity in my wire artwork. So I have thought about different traditional legend creatures and I have chosen Chinese dragon and phoenix since they are the most common ones. I also chose to do both of them because it recalls some memories from my country as well. I remember when my mother was pregnant, she has dreamed of a Chinese Dragon, which means the baby is a male. In China, the dragon represents male and phoenix represents female; this also correlated with the YingYang symbol. Therefore, I use different colors to create a hint and to isolated to show the differences between them. Moreover, when I was making the wire portraits, I considered a lot about how to fill in parts and to create patterns. This leads me to wind the wire a round and a round to form the body parts and eyes of the creatures. For the composition, I have chosen the significant and common position of a Chinese dragon and phoenix in China. Both of the creatures are close together and forms an image of them dancing. As result, I think only people who have some cultural background knowledge will understand the positioning immediately.
