Branches of Design

Space/Materiality:Culture

Assignment #2:Video Reflection

After watching three inspiring videos about design for my space and materiality class I couldn’t help but realize how many different branches of product design there are present within the world. After hearing what the three speakers had to say about their experience in the design field I came to one conclusion. Below is my reflection:

Ross Lovegrove, Paola Antonelli and Alice Rawsthorn are three different people that have come to the same conclusion. While viewing their talks I came to the conclusion that they all spoke of 3D design as a lost form of production. After listening to what Lovegrove, Antonelli and Rawsthorn had to say I believe that the 21st Century, although it is thriving in achievement, it now is only viewed in as a single style opposed to being a type of production with many styles.

As Paola Antonelli had said during her talk, many people view design as an over the top, extravagant and even luxurious format of creation. One of my favorite features out of all three videos was Antonelli’s shocking reveal of the gas mask design that is being created for children, infants and whole families. Design isn’t featured in just material clothing or furniture. As Ross Lovegrove had proven, design is used to create everything from stairs to jelly molds. Design is used not only to showcase behind a velvet rope but to form everyday objects for the population to use. Both Antonelli and Lovegrove insist on us to begin to look at design in a more energetic and “healthier” way. As Alice Rawsthorn had shown in her presentation design goes back centuries. As for back as to Black Beard and his pirates who used the design and image of heavy clothes and striking appearances to give the people they were attacking fear.

Design initiates feelings and I believe that Lovegrove, Antonelli and Rawsthorn encourage us to help change our current design. To help it find it’s true purpose once again. Design has was developed amongst humans not only for them to be able to brag, but to be able to use these products to help them in their daily lives. To create comfort.
