Field Exercise: Listen in Union Square

The Field Exercise was somewhat surreal for me. New York is generally portrayed as one of the most fast-paced, hustlin’ and bustlin’ places in the world. And that usually proves to be true- since moving here, it seems there are always places to be and things to be done. And it appears as if most other people have similar agendas. Sometimes, it’s hard to catch your breath here. But sitting in the grass at Union Square Park with my earbuds in, a variety of soundtracks humming in my ears, and people watching- except it wasn’t just people watching, it was more like taking a moment to fully experience my environment (something I rarely have time to do), was like being in a dream. And the different songs only made the experience weirder, because they affected the way I took in my surroundings. In all, I very much enjoyed this exercise. It made me realize that New York can be quite a peaceful place when you want it to be. Even though everyone is always on their way to the next destination, eventually their destination is going to be a place where they can calm down, like a grassy area in a park. And in places where those who need a break congregate, I will be able to find a moment of peace in one of the busiest cities in the world.
