Bridge 1, Sound Piece

This sound piece details my experience with and views of Hurricane Katrina. I have lived in New Orleans my entire life; the hurricane struck when I was five years old, but it is one of my most distinct memories. Hurricane Katrina was a category 1 hurricane, and it is considered one of the worst U.S. natural disasters in history.

The city knew that a hurricane was coming, and they knew it was going to be bad. But most people weren’t expecting that there would be 125 mph winds that would break the levees, our defense system set in place against flooding. New Orleans is shaped like a bowl, so we filled up with water fast. 80% of the city was underwater, to be exact. At least 1,836 people died and there were $125 billion dollars in damages.

Fortunately, Katrina did not significantly hinder my life. My story is more about the distinctiveness of the memory- things I saw and tasted and smelled. But Katrina did horrifically affect the lives of a lot of other New Orleanians, still to this day. So, I make sure to talk about that as well in my sound piece.  This is a photo of my flooded city.
