Outfit Exercise

During the outfit exercise, I had to stand in front of the class and say where my clothes were from. First, the class said words that came to mind when they saw my outfit, and then words that they thought would describe me if they had never met me and were just seeing me for the first time.

I learned from this exercise just how much clothes cause people to form opinions (often unconsciously) of someone. And now that I think about it, I do the same thing all the time. I develop an idea of what someone is like without ever having talked to them based off of the way they’re dressed. I’m not saying that is necessarily a good or bad thing; it is just something that humans do because they tend to form opinions on just about everything. Style is how we present ourselves to the world- that gets said all the time. I guess this is why no one got upset about anything that was said during the exercise (and because we kept it pretty respectful)- you can’t really get mad about how people perceive you based off of your appearance because you know it is going to happen the second you walk out of your door.
