The Building That Made Me Want To Pursue Architecture

I would have to say the building that made me want to Perdue architecture is my own home. My home is a typical late 50’s, ranch style, single story home with a basement. The architecture of the house is not necessarily where my inspiration comes from, but rather, what happened inside. My earliest memories of dealing with interior design and architecture are when I would cast aside the dollhouses purchased from the store and begin constructing my own out of shoeboxes, fabric scraps, and anything else I found suitable to crate bedrooms for my dolls. As much fun as I had creating these rooms, I didn’t realize it would lead to to career I wanted. At that point I believe I still had dreams of fashion design. My home is also where I was introduced to things like furniture design. My father, when he used to have more space and free time, worked a lot with wood. He built a bassinet, rocking horse, toy chest, a tall bookcase, and more. He even created decorative molding on the doors of my grandmothers house. The building, creating, and decorating, was all around me and I was fascinated by it. As I grew older, I stopped playing around with the small scale rooms and started working on my own bedroom. I begged my parents to repaint, I picked out all the colors, a carpet, bedding, desk, decorations, etc. I quickly grew tired of the aesthetic and got new bedding, rugs, and rearranged furniture. The next time I painted my room I learned how to do it myself, with he help of my aunt. That way, whenever the urge to redesign hit, I could take care of it myself without having to hire a painter. Since I have painted my room pale grey, a nice neutral that allows me to change many other aspects of my bedroom without needing a new paint color, I have redesigned several times. Through decorating my room, I discovered a passion for interiors and how changing, altering, and adding can completely transform a space and how that space makes you feel. About 8 years ago after constant flooding, it was time to renovate the basement in our home. My parents, realizing my new interest in design, gave me full creative license and let me pick out all the paint colors, flooring, and furniture. More recently I have been slowly swapping out items in my living room to give it a fresher look. I have also just completed re-doing my brothers bedroom. I repainted, and picked out new furniture, shelving, textiles, and art to give it a much more mature look. Before I decided I wanted to do interior design, I thought I wanted to be an architect. I of course have a great love for architecture and there are so many incredible buildings I can name that have inspired me, but my home is the place where my passions and interest in interiors, specifically, flourished.
