Bridge 1: Process Documentation 2/08/18

For my first question visualization, I used the medium photography to represent my question “why are the subway turnstiles designed the way they are?” I began thinking about the rotation of the turnstile itself and that led me to think about other rotations such as the blades in a fan.

My second question was “Who designed the system of the turnstile?” I thought of design and innovation which led me to image turning gears. I used the gears to also show motion and the mechanics of a physical system. I used illustrator to show these moving pieces.

My third question was “Why are metrocards used to swipe into the subways? When pondering this thought I was drawn to the motion and flow the cards create when they are being swiped. I used arrows to show motion and direction. I created a vector illustration as my medium.

My fourth question was “How long has the MTA been using this specific system?” This question made think about the past and the passage of time. I used colors and numbers to show dates. The turnstile was first used in the 1920’s, so I used that at my starting date then I moved into present day because they are still being used.

My fifth question was “How secure is the system of the turnstile?” I used a vector illustration to demonstrate my thought process. When I think of security I think of a lock. I used a lock drawing a various colored boxes to show security and also the different colors represent the many different people who pass through the subway each day.
