Bridge 1 Critique -Isabella- DAI – 02/08/18

Isabella used a simple black and white illustration to help visualize one of her questions. The drawing starts at the top with a large black dot, and slowly progresses using eight dots, to smaller and smaller black dots down the center of the page until the bottom, where it is represented as a speck. She uses shape, with the black circles to represent her thought process. The contrast is very evident in her use of color choice or lack thereof. Although the dots are different sizes it still shows an imbalanced pattern.

The background is white and the circular shapes are black showing a great use of contrast and space on the page that added an interesting tone to the piece. The vertical composition provides good use of space and the centering of the receding pattern gives it a nice sense of imbalance. After hearing her question, “Do people know about this statue and is it getting the recognition it deserves?”, I  can better understand the point of her work. Now when I see the piece I can feel her questioning the importance of the figure to others because the circle can show how much one person can recognize  or care about the statue, and as the dots get smaller is shows how people don’t care as much and are starting to forget the importance of it.

When I was analyzing this piece, the dots reminded me of balloons in the foreground fading into the distance and this brought my mind to think of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons because when they are all lining up in the street, you can see one and the others receding into the background in a similar pattern. I think the Macy’s parade could be a great source of inspiration because of all the different balloon designs being used, the crowds of people who come to see it, and the television coverage of the yearly event. I believe that it could be a source of inspiration to the artist.
