Understanding Comics Chapters 2&3 Response

The use of icons is representative of an idea and not the actual thing it shows an image of. Such as the pipe is not a pipe, it is a Painting or drawing of a pipe. In addition a flag is not a country, it represents one. I found the concept very interesting that when you look at a drawing of a man you see someone else, but in a more simplistic rendition of a person, such as a cartoon, you see yourself. When we are using an object, it becomes an extension of ourselves and is part of the action we create. For example, a pair of glasses become eyes and a knife becomes a hand. Pictures and writing provide different types of understanding. Pictures are received images in our brain while writing is perceived information. Gutter is the named space between the panels of a comic and it provides mystery and magic within the narrative. The gutter is not seen but still experienced but provides mental context to make sense of the continuous story line in the comic. Comics utilize visible and invisible elements and make the reader create while reading. What happens between the panels of a comics adds a sense of magic to the overall story.
