Kombucha Leather Project

When working with the material, it grew in a couple flat sheets and one of them was pretty thick. I was wondering what I could make with a sheet of flat material. After drying it, the layer became extremely thin and rail, It was flat as opposed to wrinkled like I thought it would be. I figured out I could make a card holder and or wallet with the  sheet of the finished and dried kombucha leather sheet. I drew a few sketches and I wasn’t sure if there should be one or two pockets on it. I made three designs and I was also debating whether or not I needed to stitch up the bottom of it. Once I began working with the dried kombucha leather, It was very flaky and some of it was breaking while I worked with it. I finally was able to carefully sew it together to create my wallet and card holder. I came up with this design because I was thinking of things that could be helpful and practical for me in my daily life. I carry a lot of cards around with my every dingle day because I need them all the time for many different things. I carry my debit card, to pay for things, my license, and my newcard, which I use for access to my dorm and every school building. Since the wallet is made from a thin material, I can keep my newcard inside of it and simply just press the whole wallet up against the turnstiles for the school buildings and my dorm without needing to remove it from its holder. This allows me to get quick and easy access to the buildings and save time removing the card and putting it back into a thick wallet. The card holder i made can fit up to three cards comfortably and it very practical for everyday use. The material is thin and flat, therefore, it can fit in any pocket, bag, or backpack where you might want to store it. I think I will actually be able to use it in real life and not just have it as something I created for a project in class, lie most of the projects I create. This is a really practical object that is beneficial and useful. I think that If this item was mass produced, many people would be attracted to the idea of having a simple wallet made from a 100% sustainable material that was grown simply from a tea and bacteria combination. It is very interesting and is a huge way to avoid animal cruelty and using their skins for various leather items. That is a very attractive features for a lot of consumers who are concerned with the creation of leather objects. I am very happy with the wallet and card holder I created because the design is simple, easy to make, and very sustainable. I like the flat and practical design of it and it is extremely useful to use in my daily life.
