Verb Essay

In Seminar we were asked to write a brief essay reflecting on a verb that our group picked and to write about the Write the history of word, denotation, and connotation of the word. Also how the verb has to do with my group members and myself.

Carry Out.

Carry out, a transitive verb that originated from Middle English carien, Anglo – French carier, Late Latin Carricare, apparently variant of *carrucare. Derivative of Latin carrucatraveling carriage, Celtic. The noun phrase, carry out started being used during 1965-70, Americanism; adj.

The denotation of carry out is the real meaning of the word. The actual definition, for example,  1. to bring to a successful issue: to complete, to accomplish, 2. To put into execution, to carry out a plan, 3. To continue to an end or stopping point.  The connotation of carry out means the feeling you get from the word. For me, the word carry out gives me the feeling of no longer happening or existing. When someone carries out something and they are done or finished, I think that it gives the feeling of having a weight lifted off your shoulders.  A feeling of relief.  The denotation of the word carry out is seen through  my experiences when I accomplish tasks, especially in my art.  In my studio and seminar class we are working on our peer to peer projects. I think that because we are the large group we have to make sure all our voices are heard and our individual work is carried out. This makes a project a little more difficult but I’m glad I was paired with Maegan and Oscar because I know we will carry out this project.

In our peer to peer interview the first question was “Have you been in love? If so explain? Was your heart broken or did you break a heart?” The answers given by everyone show a shift in our  experiences of love and heartbreak. We each carry out our love and romance in a different way.

Maegan carries out her love by living with the person she loved.  Oscar carries out his confidence and gets the courage to tell the person he loved that he loved him.  I have carried out my self love by finding different kinds of love with different people. The feeling of carrying out was seen in the answers to our question “What was your most embarrassing moment?” by all of us just wanting the moment to be done with.  Maegan wanted to get off of the ice skating rink so everyone would stop staring at her.  She explained the feeling of  embarrassment when she said “the only thing I could focus on was the 300 people in the stadium watching.”  She didn’t want people to be looking at her anymore and wanted to be off the rink. Oscar felt very embarrassed when he said “I heard that Christmas was on Friday the 13th this year!” He had a feeling of relief when he realized he had said the embarrassing statement just around his friends.   After I made fun of an ugly PT cruiser that ended up being mine, I wanted to leave everyone laughing at me in the parking lot. I wanted the embarrassment to be over but I still had to get into the ugly car and drive away from the laugher.

We’ve all had an experience of carrying out something either in the denotation or connotation definition of the word.   As a group we will carry out our projects in studio and seminar.
