Bridge 3: Astoria

To go explore Astoria, Queens my group include Devyani, Sharon, and me. We all took the N train down to the very last stop which was 31st street in Astoria, Queens. As we got off the train the first thing we noticed was how quiet it was. We walk around 31st street to find somewhere to sit and make a plan. There were no cars around and the train was just far enough away to not make much noise. Everyone walking around me was families that were quite. We decided to make the 10 block radius from 27th street to 37th street. As we walked up to 27th street it was still so quiet, almost dead. No one was really around and the people walking around were just minding their own business walking their dogs. I noticed so many greek restaurants. Then once we got up to 25th street there was this Greek church. We walked into it to look around and see what was inside.

What i saw

What i thought

What I felt

When we went to explore Astoria, Queens my group included  Devyani, Sharon, and me. We took the N train to the very last stop which was 31st street. The ride was long,  almost an hour to get down to the last stop.  As we got off the train and walked up to the streets of Astoria I noticed how quiet it was.   There were no cars around and the subway was just far enough away to not make much noise. Everyone walking around were families that kept to themselves with their children.  31st street was a long street that seemed to go on forever. There were stores lined up down the block. The old stores seemed like they’d been there forever.  They looked runned down.  There were also a lot of  new stores like Subways and Starbucks. It looked like they were trying to make everything new and all the same on 31st street. We walked around 31st street to find somewhere to sit and make a plan.

We walked up  24th avenue and decided to make the 10 block radius that we would visit from 27th street to 37th street. As we walked up to 27th street it was still very quiet, almost dead. No one was really around and the people walking were just minding their own business, walking their dogs. I noticed many greek restaurants. They were little restaurants that couldn’t seat many people. The windows in the front of the restaurants had signs that said “Greek food.” All the standard greek food messages were surrounded with each place’s own creative name. Once we got up to 25th street we saw a Greek church. The church had tall ceilings that when you looked up, you saw only  darkness. The seats were rows and rows of pues. The shiny religious icons were of people that I was not familiar with because I don’t know much about greek icons.

As we continued to walk down the other five blocks all there was arounded was small houses and so many laundromats.  I had never seen so many laundromats in my life in one area. I was still noticing how the houses were old and new too. Some were very vintage looking with old rugged doors and chipped painted and some were aparments just being built as we walked passed them. Tracking this perspective of a mix of old and new. In the houses, stores, and restaurants. All in all, Astoria was quites and still and I will definitely need to go back to document more of its silence beauty.
