What is Fashion?

Simply put, Fashion is an Idea. Fashion is manifested in beauty, cooking, decor, garments and so many other things. Something that is considered fashionable is usually popular among people with status, usually celebrities or designers. Fashion is an opinion shared by groups of people.

My idea of fashion has changed significantly since this class has started. My idea of fashion has grown drastically. One of the ideas that really changed my mind was looking at fashion through the lens of art. There is often debate on what is considered good art or bad art and the same goes for fashion in reference to dress. In the New York Times article ‘Is Fashion Really Museum Art?’ Susan Menkes as the question”Is fashion really so exhibition worthy? And, more importantly, are there explicit standards by which the various shows should be judged?”. I think that there are not really standards in place even for the art that is already in museums. Every garment offers something different and has so many meanings depending on the setting in which they’re seen. After all, it seems that the general accepted idea of fashion and what is good is based on opinion of a mass group of people. There really is no right or wrong idea. There is a place and time for everything and so my perception of fashion has now grown past my own opinions. Even if I think something is good or bad I try to understand the item in it’s context and why it could be considered fashionable.
