Documentary Question – Week 3

In the documentary “End of Poverty,” economist and philosopher Amartya Sen claims that poverty is Hobbes’ state of nature. Please discuss this statement briefly.

Hobbes’ state of nature says that people are inherently evil and we cannot restrain ourselves. I disagree with the statement that poverty is the definition I stated above due to the fact that poverty isn’t brought on ourselves. We cannot be blamed for the circumstances we are given in life which contradicts the circle of poverty theory (in which it is rare to overcome this). In fact, the government is by the people and for the people. We have checks and balances to combat corruption as well as programs to help the impoverished. In these rehabilitation programs, the government works with the homeless to better themselves and their situation.
