Discussion Question – Week 4

Heilbroner lists several changes that were important in giving rise to early capitalism. Which, if any, do you feel to be predominant in establishing the capitalist system?

One of the most predominant periods in establishing capitalism include the change in a widening market system. The weaving industry took a toll in the economy during France of 1666; surging mankind to create a competitive market. Guild masters challenged the local government to expand beyond innovation regulations, but were reminded that alterations beyond the number and length of threads were not allowed unless consulted by a judge. Their inability to express change and prevention of expansion negatively affected button makers who made buttons for the weaved cloth. The less buttons made, the more it would trickle down to affect tailors who needed these materials in order to sustain a living. Thus, tailors were forced to make buttons out of cloth but the government frowned upon this invention. Anyone in possession of this item or caught wearing it was to be punished. Guild masters rebelling against government overwatch was a step towards early capitalism that is built upon the people in a market. Craftsmen pushing creative, new products was a building block to a growing mindset of a society owned by the people.
