The beauty of surface was an important aesthetic quality of machine art. Designers refined modern materials and the precision of machine manufacturing and therefore were able to explore anything from porcelain and plywood to copper and steel. The objects weren’t too simple or too ornate, but showed the mechanical or utilitarian function. During the war time and after, there was an expanding middle class who sought objects that would both improve everyday life but enjoying the popular luxurious desires. Now there were inventions like dishwashers and sweeper machines in the home.
