Week 11 In Class Reading Response

During this time, theory began to be challenged by those who felt that the new postwar era was one which should embrace mass culture and advanced technology. The second machine age of the 1950s is of mass communication dispensing popular entertainment. There was a liberating power of technology that was no longer restricted. There was an ever increasing lifestyle of a “throwaway” society. Designers and manufacturers responded to the values embraced in the increasing acceptance of change and expendability as a way of life in this emerging market sector. Bright colors and boldly patterned motifs covered surfaces of mass-produced shirts, coffee mugs, and shopping bags.
