Project #1: Intervening Space – Week 2

Week 2 Assignment:

  • Select a site. Complete a site analysis and take photos/video to document.
  • Create 3 concept sketch directions for your installation
  • Create a mood board of inspiration and materials

Project #1: Intervening Space

Students will research and present historic and contemporary precedents of spatial experiences. Students will be asked to identify an existing site and key audiences that utilize it through observational research. Students will create and document type interventions that augment, disrupt, or alter the context of the site to create new meaning. Focus will be given on 3D typography, materiality, and placement.

Site Analysis + Concept Design

Questions to consider:

  • Which treatments create new meaning of the word for you?
  • Which are surprising? Demand attention?
  • How might they expand this treatment to tell a story or to create a call-to-action?
  • Where could you imagine this treatment being located in a place?
  • How might it be photographed more effectively to tell a story?

Feedback:

Like I mentioned in the crit, my worry is that people in New York are always on the move so I don’t think they will go from one place to another. I like the idea of placing the envelopes and having people tare it apart and the word “Bite” disappearing. You could add on the back a message and have on the front the individual letter.

For inside your apartment I think displaying envelopes with bite and a message would be interesting. This installation would be interactive, meaning that the people who live in your building can take an envelope and open it up to find a message in their own homes. They could even return it with the idea you had of answering questions.
