The game that I played was Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue, specifically Dream Drop Distance HD. Like many of the other Kingdom Hearts games, the core mechanic is simply the attack command. In Dream Drop Distance, the player progresses through the story by defeating enemies called “Dream Eaters”. When the player defeats the dream eaters they gain experience points as well as other items that can be used to synthesize new dream eater companions to help fight more powerful dream eaters. Though the player has the option (for the most part) to not fight the random battles, it benefits them later on when they are fighting mandatory bosses because they are a higher level making it easier to defeat the mandatory boss. Along with the experience gained and the loot gained from fighting dream eaters, the player also has a companion dream eater in their party, who helps them to fight the other enemy dream eaters. When you and your companion dream eater strike at the same time you earn “Link Points”. The player can  use the link points as a currency to buy new battle commands, magic commands, magic up, defense up, and attack up. The attack command is not only used to attack dream eaters, it can also be used to progress through the map. In some instances there is a road block that can only be moved by using the attack command. Along with progressing through an area the command attack is used to open chests that can give the player items that can be used in battle like potions, or ethers, and occasionally pieces to level up companion dream eaters.
