Compare two games

For this assignment I played two different platforming games. The first game I played was “Levelone” a game where the programmer only created one room for the player to play. The programmer watches over you as he drops new obstacles in the level for you to test out. Throughout the game he orders you not to go out the door to go to the next level, because he didn’t create the next level. As he gets more and more fed up with the player he keeps adding more and more dangerous obstacles for the player to overcome in order to not be able to leave, for an example, a bull, random blobs, and finally himself. The player is given a gun towards the middle of the game by accident which the player uses to take down the harder enemies that the programer codes into the game.

The second game that I played is called “Authentic Octopus Game” a game in which the player is an octopus traversing through an area riddled with ninjas and other obstacles that try and stop the octopus from getting to where it needs to be, which was not explained in the game. As the player progresses through the game they are given a plethora of weapons to protect themselves such as ink, missiles, and ninja stars. The octopus is led by a narrator, with help from ninjas and Socrates.

Of the two games, Authentic Octopus Game Is the better in the platform genre. Authentic Octopus Game’s main objective was to transverse through the level to get to the end, while Levelone seemed more story driven and even more towards a shooter. There was only one instance in the game when the player had to platform on actual platforms. Otherwise the entirety of the game is played on the ground. Not to mention that the player has an infinite amount of lives in Levelone, where in Authentic Octopus Game the player has a standard three lives. I enjoyed Authentic Octopus Game much more than Levelone because of this. I didn’t feel pressure to fight and win against the enemies thrown my way in Levelone since I knew there was no way for the game to end from dying. On the other hand, while playing Authentic Octopus Game I felt a lot more focused on the game because I knew there were consequences to dying.
