Seminar Reflection

After critically examining visual culture throughout the semester I find myself questioning what is and is not visual culture. My eyes were completely opened by discussing with the class what art is and what art isn’t and who even gets to decide this. It was very difficult to challenge what I was taught throughout my life about what is considered good art. Often in classes art is analyzed for its themes and elements of designs. It is rare to discuss whether the piece is art or not. With this new way of thinking, I find myself thinking differently when creating art. It has made me more loose with my art and less rigid in creating to follow a particular guideline. Prior to this thinking I would create in order to please. After thinking with this new perspective I realized that no matter what I make or how I make it someone will consider it art. It is impossible to please everyone with your art because no matter what someone will not consider it high art or art at all.  I really enjoyed analyzing visual culture on a deeper level than usual. A large amount of visual culture is scanned over and ignored so to look at in class was very interesting and opened my eyes to things like ads that I often just scan over. When going into this class I had the preconceived notion that we would only talk about traditional art but I was glad to find out that we mainly spoke about what visual culture is.
