Walking in square

For this project, Quinn and I made a Gif of a person walking around the square over and over again. Representing the ongoing ‘circle’ or in this case, ‘square of life’. We chose to add paper around our projection to allow our peers to create what the person is walking on.

We took photos of someone walking and then pieced them together to create a GIF and rotated them to look like they are walking on the ceiling and walls. (Text from Quinn’s ELP)

The final piece looks not complicated but it took us quite some time to figure out how to actually make this idea work because the reference we have is so cool but we don’t have the time and material to make it work, we need to think of something easier but still share some of the common ideas with the reference. We thought of making videos but then it looks like it is not strong enough for the final presentation. Then we think of making gifs which is more fun and fits in our whole concept.

This is the process of the audience participating in our piece. Since each audience has different life experiences, the things they draw on this piece is so different which makes it even more interesting. In addition to that, I have noticed that you could really tell everyone’s personalities by the things they draw.

The reason why we play it in this fast pace is that modern days, people living in big cities like Paris always have a fast pace of life and the gif we made is kind of the representation of that. However, when you are working towards the destination, we always care too much about the final result instead of the process, which is also important. This piece tends to tell people to slow down a little bit, pay attention to all the beautiful things happening on the journey, which might inspired you and benefit you even more than the final result.

If we have more time, the final result would definitely look so much better as the wall around the gif will be painted all with colorful figures representing each audience’s one and only ideas, it might be something they kept deep in their heart, or in their dreams and so on.
