Aphorisms:

1. Fashion moves in space and time. It shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellations. Through its forms we have an opportunity to re-unite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.

Fashion and math and science are intertwined. Time and time again has proved that things that are mathematically perfect are more pleasing to the eye. Whether explicitly or just subconsciously, we as humans are drawn to things that are symmetrical, proportional, etc. In addition to this, fashion is just as complex due to its demanding construction, its abstractness, and its ephermality. Fashion, like math and science, is a system constructed with many patterns and networks, from the very fibres that are woven into textiles to the social networks of the production line. And so much of the research that goes into the development of what we wear forces fashion to submit to the powers of math and science. As someone interested in wearable technology as an innovative sector of fashion, I believe that these fields will continue to be amalgamated through time.

2. Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition.

When we discussed the style-fashion-dress theory by Carol Tulloch, I became intrigued when my partner for discussion mentioned that fashion picks and chooses styles in order to define the clothing that represents a certain era. While certain design styles rarely change, fashion is a continuous cycle to mixing and matching different styles. Fashion is such a broad topic that requires much attention from other subordinate terms. While fashion itself changes and affects social and cultural norms of different eras, the definition of fashion is given by everything that it comes in contact with throughout time- it gains weight as more and more characteristics are attributed to the term.
