Pants: Reflection + Process

Like the dress project, there were many firsts while designing and making my pants. Since this project was a group project, my group members and I had to make sure our designs seemed like a collection so if the majority wanted to incorporate something, I had to work with it and doing so, I ended up with a garment I never thought I would make which feels very refreshing knowing I could reach out of my comfort zone. I tend to like things that are more minimalistic so creating a pair of pants that uses fake patent leather and bright orange fabric was definitely surprising and refreshing.

The most challenging part of this project was making the buttonhole. I didn’t have a zig-zag foot nor was I keen on taking another trip to the garment district amidst the cold weather so I thought I’d attempt it myself on my home machine but little did I know, it was much harder than I thought. After multiple attempts, I finally created a buttonhole! Another challenge I had was working with a fabric where I wasn’t allowed to poke holes or else it would ruin its appearance. This became especially hard when the clips I bought could no longer reach where I needed the fabric to stay together. I also couldn’t mark or iron the fabric which definitely added to the challenging aspect of this project. However after all of the turmoil, I feel much more experienced in sewing and feel that I have learned a lot once again.

Overall, this project has been extremely enjoyable because I got to know more of my classmates throughout the process. I was also able to discover myself as a designer in a new light!

Here is my process:
