DREAMLAND

Lights.

Gasp.

Disorient.

Shock.

Here.

Present.

Flailing arms, frozen in place.

Plethora of thoughts, suspended in air.

Hungry for answers

A void

Suddenly full.

Here.

A dream.

Thoughts racing,

An endless pursuit.

Searching, seeking, exploring.

A quest into the introspective abyss

My mind.

My subconscious alive.

A dream.

Fervorous thought,

Slight tug, sudden pull,

Suddenly

Engulfed.

A dream.

Lips stock-still

Form a silent scream,

A rapturous laughter,

A dreadful plea

Futile.

In this vast expanse

A dream.

Release.

Surrender.

Relinquish control.

Manifest

Who am I but a puppet disembodied

Subject to manipulation.

Still.

I am the puppet.

I am the puppet master.

A paradox.

A dream.

  1. I started off with the concept of a puppet and I wanted to explore the idea of a dream as a paradox in that we can be seen as a puppet in a dream; without control and seemingly manipulated, however we can also be seen as the puppet master, our subconscious in control of the thoughts and emotions that stream into the realm of our dreams.
  2. In this assignment, I chose four objects as the focus of my project, all of which are derived from my personal experiences with dreams. The main object is the puppet, which is showcased and spotlighted in the centre of the piece. The puppet symbolizes the idea of relinquishing control and succumbing to the experiences within my mind. The second object is the suitcase, which represents the mind as a form of transportation. Suitcases are a very ambitious and versatile object, and is often used for travel and can be filled with many different objects, similar to that of the human mind. When I dream, I feel as though the mind is transported to what I would consider, another “world” where it is able to conjure up various thoughts, feelings, and images. Then, the third object is emotions as I believe that dreams are a very phenomenal form of self reflection in which our subconscious is able to express suppressed emotions and provide insight to our reality in ways that we may not necessarily be able to understand in our waking lives. I think that dreams often hold significance and becomes a means of introspection. Finally, the last object I chose is the magnifying glass as it plays with the idea of distortion. My personal dreams are usually set in the real world, however there are certain aspects of it that are skewed, or simply put,  “off”. I wanted to use the magnifying glass to evoke a sense of distortion of reality. The overall purpose of this project is a personal investigation of my dreams in exploring the different ways my dreams interact with reality.
  3. The dreamland contains personal research that cannot necessarily be found on the internet, per say, however it is a rather introspective form of research. I wanted to explore different emotions that I have experienced in past dreams and reflect on places from which these feelings may have been derived. In addition, I researched the history of puppetry and the uses of puppets in the past.
  4. for this project, I wanted to use materials that were available to me and recycle certain materials, as well. I also incorporated many drawings in addition to watercolour paintings. In terms of the 3D aspect of the project, I used many found materials such as a desk lamp, a suitcase, toilet paper rolls, and magnifying glasses. Because I wanted this project to be interactive, I added hooks to the top of the suitcase so that one is able to move and remove specific “props” to their liking. Furthermore, I explored technological aspects by including video and music in order to enhance the overall experience of a dream.
  5. I learned many things from this project. One of the main things I learnt was to the research component, however in this project the research was not one that I was used to. I did not google to find information, instead I realized that this project required a lot of introspection and the research came. from within. I wanted to explore my personal dreams and project them in my art. Moreover, I learned how to include various media in my project in order to create something that was interesting and enticing. For example, the use lights, music, and video enhanced the overall presentation. I also think that writing the narrative was very helpful because it allowed me to come up with a clear and concise idea to present.
  6. The resources and materials that I had available to me played a huge role in developing my project because I try to use recycled materials in most of my work because I think that if I had all the materials in the world at my disposal, I would be much too overwhelmed to develop a concept. With limited materials it was much easier to look at what was available and come up with a idea.
  7. I am very happy with the overall outcome of the assignment. I believe that I was able to convey the message that I had in my vision for this project and I am glad that I was able to explore and use many different materials and media as that I something that I truly enjoy to experiment with. I also thoroughly enjoyed the process of putting everything together and developing a composition that was most captivating, in my opinion.
