Sustainable Systems: Mask for the Anthropocene

Created using collected trash including plastic bottles, cans, bags, and cardboard, it resembles a gas mask. Originally used to obtain clean oxygen, this repurposed mask is connected to garlands of trash and establishes the extent of air pollution in today’s environment by means of human waste and litter through providing a visual form to what may otherwise be invisible to the human eye.The unsaid second part to the title of this piece Being Ecological Is Not About You is the idea that being ecological is about Us. It is about you, and so much more. We are not to practice sustainability solely for oneself but rather for the greater community, surrounding and distant forests, oceans, animals and soil. This piece in conjunction to the shoes with trailing garlands of trash portray a sense of human ignorance when dealing with matters of our environment. As humans, we are created to protect, nurture, and nourish our planet. We can only do so through collaboration. Together, we have power to create positive change.
