Integrative Studio 2: Catalogue of Object

For the Cataloguing of an Object project I chose Weightlifting Shoes, an object close to me, but very far from many others.

In the sport of Olympic Weightlifting athletes are demanded to hold great amounts of weight overhead. Over the years we’ve discovered that having a slightly raised heel on a solid flat sole gave lifters the most benefit in being able to hold weight overhead in a stable position.

As an Olympic Weightlifter myself, I’ve grown attached to my weightlifting shoes, and the design behind them has always intrigued me. The aesthetics of various weightlifting shoes is also something that holds a great importance in representing a certain type of athlete.

I started out by drawing my own pair of Adidas Adipowers in Adobe Illustrator with the pen tool.

I then decided to choose  a variety of different WL shoes and draw them all in the same manner in Illustrator, but at various angles to show their attractiveness and different attributes.

All of them drawn out looked like this:

After I finished this I was pretty satisfied with it, and I printed it out 18×24 inches on a printing plotter.

But then I decided to take it further (which I now sort of regret, and would revert back to the black and white version as I feel it’s a more powerful portrayal of the shoes).

I resized and arranged the shoes and printed them out. I then colored them with colored pencils.

Drawing & Imaging: Perspective Drawing

We visited the Winter Garden Atrium down in the Financial District to really see how perspective works. We studied the mathematics of perspective, and how to apply it in our drawings. Finding angles, vanishing points, scaling, etc.

The above image was the view that I had in the atrium. I was sitting on stairs, so my eye level was almost the same level as those that would be standing on the ground.

I placed my vanishing point right in the middle and above the ground slightly.

This image was at the end of the first phase of my drawing. I had set up the basic structure of everything with graphite, and was ready to move on to applying ink.

This is how it finally turned out. I decided to apply very bold lines and used Micron pens, India ink, and graphite. Since our class theme is people, I added a figure walking across the middle of the scene. The scene was very static to begin with, so I decided to draw the figure in a stepping motion to add some movement to the piece. Finding the right scale for this figure was a challenge, but I ended up getting it correctly in the end.

Drawing & Imaging: Edible Self Portrait

The Edible Self Portrait project required us to use a variety of mediums. First we started off with color pencils. We we’re only able to use the three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. Using only these three colors I drew a still life of a kiwi:

It was challenging at first trying to figure out how to blend the colors properly, but I got the hang of it in the end.

We then continued to paint our hands in watercolor:

This was my first real attempt at a watercolor painting, and I’m proud to say that I’m happy with it. I did some practice before attempting this hand. I practiced layering colors, and leaving spaces white to add shape to the form.

Taking these two images that we created, we learned the basics of Photoshop in class, and were asked to create a compositional collage incorporating our images.

We also had to incorporate a stock background texture that was supplied to us, and some external photographs that represented ourselves. In my case I use original photographs that I had taken earlier in the year so that my final product will be 100% original content.

I learned a lot about using layer masks, and making precise selections.

I fused the kiwi with my hand to make it look like I have green flesh and a kiwi-core bone.

I also included images that i took of a New York cityscape to portray my current self.
